ALOE VERA
Aloe vera is a potent plant that has carved out a special place for itself in the realm of natural self-care. This desert-dwelling succulent is known for its thick, fleshy leaves filled with a gel-like substance that is considered a treasure trove when it comes to health and beauty.
Aloe vera plants are easy to grow, making them a no-fuss addition to any garden. They are also the most popular aloes for growing indoors – as long as you have a sunny spot to keep it. These plants are native to arid regions, tolerant of dry conditions and require little maintenance in areas that mimic their natural desert habitat.
The most important aspect of aloe vera care is the soil, which needs to be well draining to prevent root rot. Use a specialised succulent and cactus mix or amend soil with sand to create the gritty texture these plants prefer. When it comes to watering, the rule of thumb is ’less is more’. Water thoroughly but infrequently, ensuring the soil dries out entirely between waterings. Over the winter months, watering can be reduced even further.
ALOE, ALOE
✣ Split an aloe vera leaf and scoop out the gel. Apply it directly onto sunburn, minor burns or dry skin for soothing relief.
✣ Combine fresh aloe vera gel with honey for a hydrating, antibacterial face mask. Leave on for 15–20 minutes and rinse.
✣ The gel can be used as a lightweight moisturiser that’s particularly good for oily skin.
✣ Aloe vera gel can be used as a conditioning mask for hair. It helps to soothe the scalp, hydrate hair, and boost shine.
