God Of War: Ragnarok
When God of War received its dramatic and critically acclaimed reboot in 2018, gamers from all over the world couldn't wait for the sequel and 4 years later, gamers were treated to arguably the best game of 2022. God Of War: Ragnarok sees Kratos and his son Atreus hiding away in a winter-soaked land after the events of GOW 2018, yet that peace they seek is broken when the Aesir gods finally catch up to them. Ragnarok is one of the bestlooking games on any platform, yet it's the story that makes this one of the best games of the year and quite possibly of all time. The father/son bond between Kratos and Atreus is further explored and the conclusion to this game is as bittersweet as it gets. God of War: Ragnarok is without a doubt our game of 2022.
Elden Ring
And running in a very, very close second is the open world masterpiece Elden Ring, From Software's magnum opus that took everything that made their previous games so beloved and placed it into a wonderful and sprawling open world, filled with mysteries and danger around every corner. It's a testament to the strength of this game that people are still finding secrets to this, 10 months after its initial release. Elden Ring is very much a Soulsborne game, from its punishing bosses, brutal difficulty, and vague, yet fascinating storytelling, Elden Ring encapsulates everything that makes a Soulsborne game great and takes it to another level. For fans of the souls series, this is arguably From Software's best game to date, taking everything that made the previous games so special and enhancing it in every way. For newcomers, don't be put off by the difficulty, Elden Ring is difficult yes, but in a fair way. If not for God of War, Elden Ring would've easily walked away as our game of the year.
