SATURDAY JANUARY 14

CALL THE MIDWIFE

Trixie’s back and it’s all on

Screening: TVNZ 1, 8.40pm Streaming: TVNZ+ Season 12 was set up in the recent Christmas special, but there’s much more ahead. The big news is that Trixie is  returning to the story, after Helen George, who plays her, took a break last season to have her second child. And you know how Trixie and Matthew Aylward have become closer since his wife died? Recently released production pics suggest they get serious about it this season. Elsewhere in Poplar, there's a flurry of new arrivals and a bit of feminist consciousness as the 1970s beckon.

SUNDAY JANUARY 15

IAM

Three intimate portraits

Screening: Rialto, 8.30pm 7 From 2021, the second season of writer-director Dominic Savage's anthology series about contemporary womanhood, again with each of three episodes jointly developed by Savage and the lead actor. The first, I Am Victoria, with Bafta winner Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster, Gentleman Jack), tackles the stigma of mental illness. The second, I Am Danielle, with Emmy nominee Letitia Wright (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), explores the boundaries of an intimate relationship between a photographer and her model. The third, I Am Maria, with Oscar and Bafta nominee Lesley Manville (Mrs Harris Goes to Paris), focuses on an unhappy woman trying to demonstrate her worth to her husband and herself.
