Amidst a growing controversy between the Gujarat government and the Bar Council of India (BCI), the state's government-aided law colleges are on the verge of closure. This leaves aspiring law students facing the prospect of paying exorbitant fees in self-financed institutions.
The crisis stems from a disagreement between the state government and the BCI, the apex body for advocates in India, regarding faculty numbers and infrastructure in government-aided law colleges. The BCI hasn't renewed the recognition of these colleges this year, resulting in a legal battle that has reached the Gujarat High Court.
Recently, a bench comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi heard a case concerning the dwindling number of classes in government-aided colleges and the simultaneous surge in self-financed colleges across the state.
