When Nimit Ganatra emerged from the National Testing Agency's (NTA) University Grants Commission (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET) for the third time on June 18, he felt confident about finally passing the exam. The 36-year-old faculty member at a private college in Rajkot had taken the UGC NET to gain admission to a PhD programme at a prestigious institute and secure a government job. However, his hopes were dashed when the education ministry announced the cancellation of the exam late on Wednesday night.
"I took a month's leave from work so that I could finally score better and pass the exam, allowing me to enrol in a PhD programme.
Now, the exam is cancelled and will be held again," Ganatra lamented.
