Brave Gunner saved by stem cell transplant

BEAMING Gunner Lewis-Vale can't contain his delight as he swings into action following a life-saving stem cell transplant from umbilical cord blood.

The five-year-old, born with a rare metabolic disorder which stops his body breaking down sugar, has taken his first steps outside in six months since the operation.

He had been in forced isolation since January, when he received stem cells which had been frozen at below -150C with liquid nitrogen vapour for 15 years.

But now his immune system has been reset, he can go out and play with his parents Holly and Jamie, both 34, and his big sister Daisy, seven.
