The barrage came shortly after Israel told the US and other allies a limited incursion into the country was imminent.
In what was seen as a precursor to a ground invasion, Israel's military declared parts of its northern border a "closed military zone", after it had massed tanks and equipment.
As flashes and the sound of explosions fractured the darkness, it wasn't clear if regular Israeli forces had rolled across the border.
Some reports suggested tanks had been seen in southern Lebanese towns, although there was no official confirmation from Israel.
Reports suggested Lebanon's army had pulled back from positions on the border in response to Israel's threats of an incursion against Hezbollah targets.
Weaker
Lebanon's national army, which is widely considered to be weaker in terms of fighting strength than Hezbollah, was said to be regrouping at least three miles north of the frontier. It was unclear whether they would engage with any invasion, or remain in their bases.
Meanwhile, the US announced it was sending a "few thousand" troops to the Middle East to bolster security and to defend Israel if necessary, the Pentagon said yesterday.
The additional forces would raise the total number of troops in the region to as many as 43,000.
