The assault, which came a day after a rocket attack on Israel, was launched amid fears of an all-out regional war following the killings of a Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and Hamas' top political leader in Iran.
Iran-backed Hezbollah militants said they targeted a military base in revenge for "assassinations" by Israel in southern Lebanese. It did not seem to be the intense retaliation expected from Iran and its allied militias.
Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged near-daily strikes for the past 10 months in Jerusalem's war with Hamas in Gaza.
