Keir's choice: Risk wrath of millions or change course

I'M sure becoming the subject of a No1 parody song about freezing pensioners wasn't how Keir Starmer saw his year ending. But here we are. In the months since forming a Government, the Prime Minister expended more political capital in record time than any of his predecessors. He's rumoured to have the lowest approval ratings since James Callaghan - which is saying something.

So far, Labour has tried everything to calm the disquiet from blaming the Tories to navigating around the mysterious £22billion "black hole" - but the electorate isn't having it. It is quite something to whine about the legacy of austerity while somehow finding billions of pounds to spend on vanity projects and hotels for illegal migrants. Most people rightly feel antagonised by this new Government, with the exception of unions and public sector workers, who have little to complain about after inflation-busting pay rises.

For everyone else, Labour has broken promise after promise.
