Jason Tarry, who spent 33 years at Britain's biggest supermarket, was named yesterday as new chairman of the worker-owned partnership.

He will replace Dame Sharon White, who announced last year that she was standing down.

Tarry, 56, will become the seventh chairman of the firm, which owns the John Lewis department store chain and grocer Waitrose.

He takes over in September as the group bids to regain its strength, though it did return to profit last month after three years of losses.
