'Astounding inequality' in English cancer death

TORY health cuts have led to a shocking inequality in cancer deaths across the UK, experts claim.

A study found people in poorer areas are more likely to die from the disease than those living in wealthier spots.

Stark figures show a north south divide in life expectancy.

The widest differences were for cancers where risks can be cut with lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking and where screening is available.

It sparked calls to reinstate axed early intervention schemes. Study chief Professor Majid Ezzati said: "This highlights the astounding inequality in cancer deaths in different districts around England."

For women, the chances of dying before they turn 80 ranged from one in 10 in Westminster, Central London, to one in six in Manchester.

One in eight men in Harrow, North West London, are Lung expected to die, compared to one in five in Manchester. Lung tumours were the leading cause of cancer deaths.
