Lady Cathy, who the former Manchester United manager described as his rock, died yesterday morning in Cheshire.
The devoted couple had been married for 57 years.
A statement for the family said: "We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters and 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild."
The couple met at a typewriter factory in Glasgow in the 1960s.
Ferguson was an apprentice toolmaker and playing part-time for St Johnstone when a young Cathy Holding first saw him.
He had a cut to his face covered with a plaster after a match injury and he said: "I was 22. She thought I was a gangster or a boxer. We got really close and I really loved her."
