AN army of volunteers has joined the emergency services to help deal with the carnage caused by the worst floods in Europe for years.

Thousands of people went to the hardest hit parts of Valencia province in Spain with brushes, shovels and much-needed supplies including food and water to help strangers in need.

One of the volunteers, Guillermo Garcia, 20, who was with his dad, Herman, 52, said: "We have been lucky, but we want to help those less fortunate. We are all people - we have to help each other."

The student, who talked to the Mirror while walking to the area of Sedavi with items such as blankets, added: "It's hard to see people going through this." Guillermo, who lives in Valencia city centre, spoke yesterday shortly after the death toll rose to at least 205, including a 71-year-old Briton.

Around 250 more people are feared missing. It was revealed yesterday that the dead include footballer Jose Castillejo, 28, who had played for the Valencia youth team.
