The UK Biobank project is the first in the world to carry out whole genome sequencing on 500,000 people and has today opened up its database to scientists around the world.
Those behind it call it "the most detailed picture of human health that exists".
It could usher in a new era of personalised treatments, and help scientists learn how to prevent disease by predicting who will develop dementia, Parkinson's and cancer.
