A Braveheart who shone a light on a devastating illness

Just as he did to Ray Kennedy and Dave Watson as he ran at the English defence, blond mane flowing behind him in the Wembley sunshine, to arrow Asa Hartford's free-kick down and past Ray Clemence to give Scotland the lead on the day the goalposts came down and the turf made its way into thousands of back gardens north of the Border.

A photograph of that iconic moment has become part of Scottish football folklore and prompted McQueen to say with a smile: "That was actually me on the way down. And I don't know why Ray Clemence had the cheek to dive for the ball. It was coming back out of the goal before he even moved."
