ISRAEL pounded Beirut with airstrikes yesterday raising fears for Brits trying to escape the stricken capital by air.

At least one missile landed just outside the city's Rafic Hariri International Airport.

More UK mercy flights were expected to leave in the coming days.

Hundreds of Royal Marines in Cyprus are on standby to assist in evacuations if the situation worsens.

The Middle East is on a knife edge waiting for Israel's promised revenge attack after Iran launched a 180-missile salvo on Tuesday.
