DEREK MCINNES admits Gary Mackay-Steven is showing his old sparkle as he trains with Kilmarnock.

The former Aberdeen and Dundee United attacker is a free agent after his deal at Hearts expired and has linked up with the Rugby Park side as he works his way back from a foot injury.

Mackay-Steven was involved with Killie's squad at yesterday's open training session.

McInnes is happy to assist the 33-year-old's progress and has made it clear, at this stage, there is no talk of deals.

Even so, the Killie boss can't help but be impressed by the former Scotland star's work.

McInnes, who had him at Aberdeen before he went to New York City in 2019, said: "He's been in this week and last week. He's been terrific.

"He's trained every day. He looks good and he's shown his qualities. You would have seen that if you saw any training.

"We're really pleased to get him in and help him out but it is just a case of that at the minute, nothing more.

"It's still early days for Gary to be thinking about anything. It's just helping him out and getting him back to fitness.
