HARRY KANE described the moment he became England's greatest scorer as "magical" after leading the Three Lions to their first win on Italian soil in over six decades.

The Tottenham superstar's penalty, just before half-time, took his international tally to 54, going past Wayne Rooney's mark of 53.

And the captain's spot-kick proved to be the decisive strike in a victory that got 10-man England's Euro 2024 qualifying campaign off to the perfect start.

Kane said: "The record means everything.

"Once it hit the back of the net it was just huge emotion.

"Huge thanks to all the players, the staff, the fans, my wife, my family back home, everybody who's helped me get to this stage.

"It's a magical moment." The man whose record Kane eclipsed in the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium paid tribute to the hero.

Rooney tweeted: "Congrats to Harry Kane on becoming England's leading all-time goalscorer. I knew it wouldn't take long but that was quick"
