How many ministers got rid of messages?

HUMZA Yousaf was accused by Holyrood MSPs yesterday of "dodging responsibility" in the WhatsApp secrecy row.

The First Minister was grilled in the Scottish Parliament over why senior figures had reportedly deleted WhatsApp messages relating to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

Former FM Nicola Sturgeon and Jason Leitch, the national clinical director, are both accused of deleting messages from phones.

Yousaf insisted all relevant messages that had been retained would be handed over "in full" to the UK Covid Inquiry, which is examining Britain's response to the public health crisis.

But the SNP leader couldn't say how many ministers and senior government officials from the 70 cited by the inquiry had complied with a "do not destroy" order to retain their messages.

He told MSPs he didn't know what formal requests had been made to ministerial colleagues or what evidence they had provided, due to confidentiality rules.
