A SCOTS mum stranded in Sudan has managed to escape the war-torn country with her four children - but had to leave her husband behind.
Jennifer McLellan and her kids were among hundreds of UK citizens who managed to board a series of military flights evacuating them from capital Khartoum amid a ceasefire.
But the 36-year-old was forced to leave her Sudanese hubby Mohamed, known as Mo, behind as he returned to the war zone to help his mum. The family arrived safely in Cyprus yesterday after boarding a flight in the early hours.
They managed to catch a further flight to London last night and will now make their way home to Scotland.
Jennifer's uncle Donald Gillies, 59, said Jennifer was relieved to have escaped with her children - but leaving Mo behind was “horrendous”. He said: “We’re all relieved but we’re only partially relieved.
“Mo did a wonderful job of getting them to safety and then they’ve had to stand back and watch him walk back into danger.
“That’s a horrendous situation for Jennifer to be in and it must be weighing heavily on her mind.
“Mo drove them to the airport and had to leave with less fuel and food than before. His resources are seriously depleted. We just want to make sure he’s safe.”
Jennifer, a teacher from Islay, and her family were struggling to make contact with Mo last night after receiving initial confirmation he had made it home.
The family have now turned their attentions to helping him and his relatives get safely out of Sudan – where a power struggle between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary force, has killed hundreds and injured thousands of people.
