THEY travelled to Germany carrying the hopes of a nation we were about to witness history on the big stage.

But within 10 days of Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign getting off to the worst possible start, the players were left – like the rest of us – watching the remainder of the tournament on TV.

And according to Lawrence Shankland, that still stings. Badly.

Almost a month after the curtain came down on another miserable major tournament experience, the Hearts skipper emerged as one of the first to speak about the nightmare – and admits the pain and frustration of falling short is still raw.

There was no dressing up the failure from the striker who expects Steve Clarke and his men to undergo a thorough debrief of where it went wrong before the manager picks up his troops for the Nations

League campaign in seven weeks’ time.

Shankland was given just 23 minutes plus injury time of action as a second half sub across the three group games.
