HUMZA Yousaf says he will rip up plans to ban alcohol advertising if he succeeds Nicola Sturgeon as a new poll revealed he is favourite to become Scotland's next first minister.

The Health Secretary is "minded" to scrap a consultation on booze restrictions after businesses blasted the proposals.

He also said he would be keen to increase the £25a week Scottish Child Payment (SCP) for low income families in his first budget.

Yousaf, who is vying with Finance Secretary Kate Forbes and backbencher Ash Regan for the top job, is ahead in the first poll of party members since Sturgeon announced her decision to stand down.

The survey by Savanta found 31 per cent were backing Yousaf, 25 per cent supporting Forbes and 11 per cent opting for Regan, while 32 per cent of SNP members were undecided.

In an interview with the Record, he addressed concerns about a consultation which is considering banning alcohol sponsorship for sports and live events.

It could also see distillery and brewery shops barred from selling branded merchandise to visitors, as well as branding being removed from pub umbrellas and glassware.
