SKINT Scots are not using energy in their homes because they cannot afford gas and electricity, according to a consumer charity.

Advice Direct Scotland said more than 30 families weekly are affected, adding that the energy crisis was far from over and high prices mean many households cannot pay off their debts.

The body said over 120 families monthly are having to stop using energy as they cannot afford to top up their prepayment meters.

Hazel Knowles, energy lead for Advice Direct Scotland, said: "It's extremely worrying that despite the milder weather, one of the most common reasons people are calling us for help is because they have been forced to stop using their gas or electricity.

"This just goes to show the energy crisis is far from over, with prices still much higher than they have been and many people still deep in debt to their suppliers.
