THE NEIL DEAL

NEIL GOURLEY saw plenty of silver linings last night after coming off second best to Jakob Ingebrigtsen in a battle royale for 1500 metres gold at the European Indoor Championships.

The 28-year-old from Glasgow tracked the Olympic champion onto the last lap of the Istanbul final with his eye on victory.

But the Norwegian had just enough on the closing bend to defend his title in a championship record of 3:33.95.

Gourley clocked 3:34.23 short of the British record he set last weekend - but in joining Jake Wightman, Josh Kerr and Chris O'Hare in the club of Scotsman earning middle-distance medals at major championships in recent years, he fulfilled his goal of giving Ingebrigtsen a run for his money.

"He is who he is," he said.
