PRISON chiefs will no longer initially send transgender women inmates to female prisons, following the furore over convicted rapist Isla Bryson.
The 31-year-old was last month convicted of two rapes in 2016 and 2019, while she was known as Adam Graham.
The rapist only began to identify as a woman after her arrest by police and there was uproar when she was initially jailed at Cornton Vale womens prison, near Stirling.
Bryson was later moved to HMP Edinburgh and after a furious backlash, the Scottish Government banned trans women with a history of violence against woman going to all-female jails.
Now, prison bosses have gone a step further and will send all new transgender prisoners to jails that match their sex at birth rather than their acquired” gender.
A report by Scottish Prison Service SPS) chiefs to Justice Secretary Keith Brown also claimed there was no risk of harm” to female inmates by the decision to send Bryson to Cornton Vale.
The row came as SNP MSPs attacked their own government over the trans prison scandal and the controversial Gender Recognition Reform Bill, currently blocked by Westminster.
