BEN STOKES accused Australia of forsaking the spirit of cricket as an Ashes cheat storm erupted and turned hallowed Lord's into a raging bearpit.
Fuelled by anger after Jonny Bairstow's controversial dismissal, Stokes' breathtaking 155 was not enough to prevent England going down to a bitter 43-run defeat in the second Test.
Bairstow was given out stumped after wandering out of his crease at the end of Cameron Green's over, believing the ball was dead when wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw down the stumps.
But umpire Ahsan Raza had not called 'over' and when third umpire Marais Erasmus upheld the Aussies' appeal, skipper Pat Cummins refused to withdraw it.
Outraged spectators branded Cummins a cheat and repeatedly chanted: "Same old Aussies, always cheating." England captain Stokes, who hit nine sixes in a heroic counterattack, scowled: "Would I want to win a game in that manner? The answer, for me, is no.
