Agony for Hogg as Scots great is forced to quit

HISTORY will remember Stuart Hogg as an all-time great of Scottish rugby - but he has been denied the chance to bow out on the game's biggest stage.

The 31-year-old full-back announced yesterday lunchtime that he has retired from the game with immediate effect, meaning he will miss out on this autumn's World Cup.

Hogg has spoken before about the pain of being part of the Scotland side which plummeted out of the global tournament at the end of the pool stage in Japan four years ago.

And he had hoped that his battered and bruised body could last long enough to have a shot at redemption in France this September and October.

Hogg had already revealed he planned to step back from the game after the World Cup but wanted to go out on his terms.
