The pair were so close the iconic actor asked Gareth to move in and help cook comfort food in his final weeks before he passed away from lung and liver cancers in May 2017.
He says: “It’s usually a dream of us being in a car together on the way to an appointment or stage show.
“We spent so much time together in cars, where he’d recall tales from his career.
“It still feels strange he isn’t here any more but the memories remain vivid. I miss him terribly.”
The pair met at Pinewood Studios, where Sir Roger had kept his office since 1970, and struck up a friendship. When his previous assistant retired, Gareth was offered the job.
Gareth recalls: “I knew about his career, and he saw me as somebody he liked, trusted, and thought we could work together.”
After being sent home following radiotherapy during his final three weeks, Gareth moved into Sir Roger’s Switzerland home to tend to kitchen duties.
He explains: “All his wife Kristina could cook is fried eggs and we always used to laugh about that.
