OWEN Farrell's World Cup could still be wrecked after rugby's rulers finally put their heads above the parapet and appealed against his reprieve.

The England captain is sweating - again - over his campaign after World Rugby lodged a formal objection against his red card being downgraded.

The controversy has left social media in a tailspin and rugby's big hitters have been out in force slamming the verdict.

And Farrell's father, Andy - now coach of Ireland - and England boss Steve Borthwick have joined forces to take aim at critics and the process of the appeal.

The Six Nations, who run current the Summer Nations Series of games, said it will be heard early next week but could not confirm a day or names of the committee last night.

England thought their kingpin was in the clear after Tuesday's independent disciplinary hearing downgraded his red card for a reckless hit on Wales' Taine Basham last weekend to a yellow.
