Twice Daniel Farke's side were forced to come from behind at Swansea and then, after seeing the battling home side get back on level terms in the 90th minute, they struck to win a thriller in the 91st.
The last time Leeds were top of the Championship was on March 28.
Manager Farke had dropped Gnonto to the bench after he had failed to score in his last eight games and he was delighted to see him break his barren spell.
"It felt the right time to give him a rest and to take the pressure off him. I told him to keep going and the goals will come, and it was a crucial goal today," said Farke (right).
"I've won this league twice and it is the first time for ages for this club to be on top of the table.
