Prices up 4 times as salad shortage bites

MARKET traders are being forced to hike fruit and veg prices due to shortages and surging costs.

One stallholder reported paying £24 for a box of just 20 tomatoes as the salad crisis hitting supermarkets sees shoppers increasingly turn to markets and greengrocers.

Businesses claim huge wholesale costs mean they either have to charge high prices on the likes of cucumbers, peppers, toms and lettuces or take a tiny profit.
