LEWIS HAMILTON has told Mercedes they must have their "greatest six months of development" if they are to stand any chance of catching Red Bull next season.
The stark message came after Max Verstappen waltzed to victory by almost 20 seconds in the Japanese Grand Prix to clinch a sixth constructors' championship for Red Bull.
Verstappen can land his third drivers' title in as many seasons at the next race in Qatar and, given his rival's dominance, Hamilton (inset) is urging his team to work like never before to ensure he and team-mate George Russell can take the fight to Red Bull next year.
"I have no idea where the car is going to be next year but we are a long, long way away," said Hamilton, who finished fifth at Suzuka, two places ahead of Russell.
