The 41-year-old superstar won four Grammys last night including the best dance/electronic music album award for Renaissance, which took her total to 32, passing the previous record held by the late Hungarian-British conductor Georg Solti.
Beyoncé had arrived late at the event in Los Angeles because she was stuck in traffic and missed her first award of the night best R&B song.
But she was in the audience by the time the record-breaking honour was announced. Taking to the stage, she said: "I'm trying not to be too emotional, I'm trying to just receive this night."
In reference to her album, which drew on the history of LGBTQ culture, she added: "I'd like to thank the queer community - you invented the genre."
