The former Beatle bought the distinctive Hofner bass for £30 in 1961 in Hamburg, where the band learned their trade playing club nights.
He played it at gigs at Liverpool’s Cavern Club and on the Fab Four’s first two albums as well as on hits including Love Me Do. He was still using it in 1969 while they were making their final studio album Let It Be, but it was stolen from a van in Ladbroke Grove in 1972.
