President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation on Wednesday in paying tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 100th birth anniversary, with the PM remembering the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart as the one who "dedicated his life to building a strong, prosperous, and self-reliant India".

Top leaders of the ruling NDA joined a prayer meeting in honour of the former PM at his memorial - "Sadaiv Atal" in the Capital. Besides President Murmu and PM Modi, other dignitaries at the ceremony included Union ministers Amit Shah and J P Nadda, and BJP allies N Chandrababu Naidu, Lalan Singh and Jitan Ram Manjhi. Later, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Nadda, along with other parliamentarians, visited the Central Hall of the old Parliament building to offer floral tributes to Vajpayee's portrait.

The PM hailed Vajpayee in a post on X, saying: "Respectful tributes to former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji on his 100th birth anniversary. He dedicated his life to building a strong, prosperous, and self-reliant India."
