The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has sought an explanation from Delhi airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) after an IIT Delhi technical team flagged safety concerns with certain sections of the airport's Terminal 1 (T1), according to officials aware of the matter.
The detailed audit by IIT-D was conducted after one of the canopies in T1 collapsed, leading to the death of a cab driver. The accident took place on June 28, when the city received its highest rainfall this monsoon. The accident prompted civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu to initiate a detailed inspection to ensure the structural integrity of the terminal.
The officials cited above said that T1 will not be operationalised this winter as a result of IIT-D's findings.
