The US Congress passed a stopgap funding bill on Saturday with Democratic overwhelming support after Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy backed down from an earlier demand by his party's hardliners for a partisan bill. However, the deal left out aid to war-torn Ukraine as requested by President Joe Biden.
The Democratic-majority Senate voted 88-9 to pass the measure to avoid the federal government's fourth partial shutdown in a decade, sending the bill to Biden, who signed it into law before the 12:01am (local time) deadline.
The House earlier had voted 335-91 to fund the government till November 17.
The last-ditch "continuing resolution" was pitched by McCarthy as millions of public workers looked set to be sent home unpaid, upending government functions from military operations to food aid to policymaking.
