The court also pulled up the department for alleged dereliction of duty and taking the hazardous pollution crisis "casually". "You (the forest department) are responsible for the mess citizens of Delhi are in today because of the pollution... Do you want people to live in gas chambers? It is only application of mind and it is only sensitivity that is lacking," said the single-judge bench of justice Jasmeet Singh.
The observations came a day after the pollution levels tipped into the "severe" category for the first time this season. On Friday, they worsened to levels only witnessed in November 2021 as the average air quality index stood at 468, and touched 500, which falls in the extreme end of "severe" category, at some places, the Central Pollution Control Board data showed. On Wednesday too, the court has told the forest department that it was "responsible for the quality of air we breathe. It is your obligation to ensure that the air quality index (AQI) comes down".
