IF there is one major lesson to take forward into the 2024 season from this year's football Championship, it is that one week turnarounds don't work.

In fact, it appears they skew the Championship and render some of the biggest games of the year - All-Ireland quarter-finals - one sided affairs.

Look what happened to Mayo after landing the Division 1 League title against Galway at Croke Park.

They were listless in defeat to a well set-up Roscommon the G following weekend in the Connacht quarter-final.

It was Mayo's fourth big game in 21 days, where Roscommon had a fortnight off to prep for the Championship.

More tellingly, look at Tyrone and Mayo, both beaten after 45 minutes of their respective All-Ireland quarter-final encounters with Kerry and Dublin after seven day turnarounds.

Tyrone (inset, Mattie Donnelly) were playing a third huge Championship game in 13 days, Mayo a third in 14 days.

Both had to play in preliminary quarter-finals, giving them a one week break compared to the two weeks table toppers Dublin and Kerry (plus Derry and Armagh) enjoyed.
