MADONNA says her family's support made all the difference after her health scare last month.

The pop icon, 64, added that she is "lucky to be alive" after developing a serious bacterial infection in June which caused her to be admitted to intensive care for several days.

Alongside an Instagram post which featured a photo of her hugging her son David and another beside her daughter Lourdes, she wrote: "Love from family and friends is the best medicine.

"One month out of the hospital and I can reflect. As a mother you can really get caught up in the needs of your children and the seemingly endless giving...

"But when the chips were down my children really showed up for me. I saw a side to them I had never seen before.
