REPORTS of domestic abuse towards men soared by over 40 per cent last year, shocking new figures have revealed.
Men’s Aid also received a massive 4,683 calls and emails from distraught victims between this January and June, ranging from emotional abuse to physical violence.
The most common age-group were 55 to 70-year-olds, though the service has catered for clients from 18 to 95, many of whom have been suffering in silence for decades.
Kathrina Bentley, the charity’s chief executive, says there has been a significant increase in cases in recent years.
“There was a 42 per cent increase last year compared to 2021,” she told the Irish Mirror.
“In the past three years – where domestic violence has been under the spotlight – contacts have gone from around 5,200 a year to about 10,000 last year.
“So you’re talking of a nearly 100 per cent increase over the past three years. We are supporting 40 to 50 men a day.”
Ninety-four per cent are men saying they have been abused by a female.
