10 dead as car hits crowd

AN SUV ploughed into a crowd celebrating New Year in New Orleans, leaving 10 people dead, according to the BBC. Thirty people were also reported to have been injured.

The incident took place at the intersection of Bourbon Street, renowned for its numerous bars and clubs, and Iberville about 3.15am local time. Eyewitnesses reported that a truck crashed into the crowd at high speed before the driver exited the vehicle and began firing a weapon. Police returned fire shortly after.

The city of New Orleans issued a statement: "Mass Casualty Event on Canal and Bourbon Street. The 8th District is currently working a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle that drove into a large crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street. There are 30 injured patients and 10 fatalities.
