Onana has just finished his second training session of the day at the campus. He is adapting to United’s new goalkeeping coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar’s methods and is filmed collapsing to the turf in feigned agony at miscuing the ball during a drill.
Ever the competitor, Onana opted for some gamesmanship during a penalty shootout after the Reds had lost to Arsenal. Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Magalhaes took exception but Onana denied Kai Havertz and Jakub Kiwior missed the target in United’s spotkick win.
Despite a chequered first season, Onana is more bullish than ever. He will continue to be the playmaking goalkeeper he was bought as.
“Yes, that’s me,” he says. “And I think it’s what you’re gonna see this season because I will take a lot of risks. I can tell you in advance already (laughs)! Be prepared because it’s gonna be this season, trust me! I will enjoy it even more when this season starts.”
Did you say “risks”?
