De Gea has entered the final months of a four-year deal that has seen him earn 375,000 per week since 2019 and although talks are thought to have been underway for some time little progress had been made up until recently.
United have the option to extend the Spaniard’s contract for a further season, although that would mean maintaining his huge wages something they are wanting to avoid. As such, talks over a new deal on reduced wages have been mooted by the club and seemingly accepted by De Gea, whose current salary has him as the joint highest earner in the Premier League alongside Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.
