United's winless run in European competition now stretches to six games and they had led in five of those. That includes this one, with Christian Eriksen scoring an excellent first-half opener after a slick team move.
But once again the lead vanished, with Youssef En-Nesyri heading home an equaliser early in the second half from an Allan Saint-Maximin cross. Fenerbahce were then denied a penalty when Bright OsayiSamuel went down in the box - and Mourinho was sent off for his angry reaction.
UGARTE'S QUALITY
Manuel Ugarte has had a difficult start to life at United since his £42m move from Paris Saint-Germain, but his contribution to Eriksen's goal was perhaps his best moment yet.
The Uruguayan shone against Barnsley but this was several levels up. In the clinical and firm tackle he put in on Fred to win the ball in the lead-up to the opening goal, he showed why United wanted him.
The 23-year-old doesn't seem to have Ten Hag's full trust just yet and he had played only two minutes in the previous three games. Sofyan Amrabat stirred up the contention over United's decision to sign Ugarte by saying Ten Hag wanted to bring him back this summer.
His passing might need work but his strength is in the defensive side of the game. Winning the ball back for the goal emphasised that and he used the ball well, quickly swapping passes with Eriksen before finding a nicely weighted pass to Joshua Zirkzee.
