A COURAGEOUS cop who survived a double shooting which claimed the life of his colleague has been laid to rest.
The funeral of Sergeant James Bowden, who has died aged 78, took place yesterday.
He was one of two officers who carried out a routine check which led to a cold-blooded killing by a suicidal gunman.
In the early hours of September 14, 1989, Inspector Ray Codling, 49, was shot dead after he and Sergeant Bowden, then 44, went to Birch Services on the M62 to make inquiries about a van.
They questioned a man in a motorbike jacket and helmet, who gave them a false ID.
When the officers went to check his bike, he ran towards them.
