Senior First Officer Jamie Fernandes, 24, was a former pupil at Bolton School.
He and Captain Matt Greenhalgh, 28, were en-route to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in a taxi when the fatal collision occurred at 5.31am on Thursday.
The devastating incident, which took place on the westbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 7, involved their taxi and two HGVs. Both pilots were pronounced dead at the scene.
Cheshire Police have confirmed that specialist officers are supporting the families of the deceased.
