THE team tasked with transforming the Strangeways area on the edge of Manchester city centre has been selected.
Consultants have been appointed by two councils to draw up a masterplan for the much-maligned neighbourhood for the next decade and beyond.
Manchester and Salford councils have joined forces to a commission a specialist team to develop a plan for the area which they describe as 'currently synonymous with crime and a poor quality local environment. The Cambridge area of Salford is also included.
Work to improve the area along Bury New Road - dubbed Counterfeit Street - has already started with stores selling knock-off goods closed down in a highprofile police operation.
The local authorities are also hoping that Strangeways prison - described as 'one of the biggest hurdles facing the area' - will be closed and relocated.
