The TUI flight from Zakynthos in Greece was forced to divert to Newcastle after the pilot and co-pilot lost suddenly sight of the runway as they made their descent.
In a serious incident report into the last-ditch aborted landing, the pilots described it 'all going black outside' as they hit a band of torrential rain while coming in to land on June 12 last year.
