Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah received a temporary reprieve on Monday in an alleged land allotment ‘scam’ as the Karnataka High Court directed a special court to defer proceedings against him until August 29. The case has sparked a political firestorm in the state, with the ruling Congress and Opposition BJP engaging in a war of words and street protests.
The controversy stems from Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot’s August 16 order granting sanction for Siddaramaiah’s prosecution under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The sanction relates to alleged irregularities in the allotment of alternative sites to the Chief Minister’s wife by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).
